  • 112V auxiliary battery — left side of the PE(motor) room, behind a service cover. Disconnect (−) terminal before the yellow lever.
  • 2Yellow lever (interlock connector) — front-trunk / under-hood. Pull UP to cut HV (does not pull all the way out). Wait 5 min for capacitor discharge. Verify position on-vehicle.

Schematic zones only — front/mid/rear are approximate. Verify exact locations against the OEM Emergency Response Guide.

First 10 minutes — pre-flight

Before you touch the vehicle. Run this once for every inbound EV or hybrid.

  1. Park downwind, on level ground

If the pack is in thermal runaway it will vent flammable + toxic gas. Stay upwind. Block wheels.

  2. PPE on: HV-rated gloves, safety glasses, no jewelry

Class 0 (1000V) rubber insulating gloves with leather over-protectors are the floor for any HV work.

  3. Walk-around: damage scan + signs of pack compromise

Coolant pooling, white smoke/vapor, hissing, bulging panels, exposed orange cables, or chemical smell = stop. Treat as live and call OEM hotline.

  4. Confirm the vehicle is this card (year, make, model)

Pack location and disable procedure differ between generations. Use the distinguishing visual to be sure.

  5. Locate your fire suppression and first-aid kit before starting

Water is the only effective agent on Li-ion. Dry chemical, foam, and CO₂ will not stop a runaway. Have ≥250 gallons accessible.

HV Disable

  1. Primary
Power OFF (press P, then POWER button to OFF; keep Smart Key ≥2 m away), open the hood / front trunk, open the 12V battery service cover, disconnect the 12V auxiliary battery negative (−) terminal, then PULL UP the yellow lever (interlock connector) to cut off high voltage

Yellow lever (interlock connector) is in the front-trunk / under-hood area, near the 12V battery service cover. The 12V auxiliary battery is in the left side of the PE (motor) room. (Kia ERG diagrams; confirm exact positions on-vehicle.)

  2. Backup
EMERGENCY (Case II) — IG fuse removal: open hood, remove PE(motor)-room fuse-box cover, use the fuse puller to pull the IG1 and IG2 fuses (or all fuses/relays if IG can't be found), then disconnect the 12V battery and pull the yellow lever as above

PE (motor) room fuse box, under the hood

Note
Per the Kia EV6 Emergency Response Guide. The disable is a DISCONNECT, not a cut. Two documented paths: CASE I (normal): Power OFF → disconnect 12V (−) → pull the yellow lever (interlock connector) up to cut high voltage. The yellow lever does NOT pull all the way out. CASE II (emergency, if Power button fails): pull the IG1 + IG2 fuses from the PE(motor)-room fuse box (or all fuses/relays), then do the 12V + yellow-lever steps. Before disconnecting the 12V battery, turn OFF the ignition and remove the Smart Key at least 2 meters away to prevent accidental restart. Confirm the READY light is OFF — if illuminated the vehicle is live and can move silently. Do NOT cut the orange high-voltage cables. Never touch, cut, or open the HV battery.

12V battery & SRS

12V location: Left side of the PE (motor) room (front), behind a 12V battery service cover, per Kia ERG. Disconnect the negative (−) terminal before pulling the yellow lever.

Kia ERG: the 12V auxiliary battery is in the left side of the PE(motor) room. Open the hood / front trunk, open the 12V battery service cover, and disconnect the negative (−) terminal. Once disconnected, power controls (windows, doors, tailgate) stop working — lower windows / unlock / open the tailgate first if needed. It also powers the VCU/VCMS that control HV current.

Pack & no-cut zones

Pack location: Floor-mounted underbody, mid (under the chassis, between the front and rear wheels)

Pack chemistry: Lithium-ion polymer

cable color:Orange

Do not cut:

  • Orange-jacketed HV cables (under-floor, front and rear; SAE-standard orange)
  • HV battery pack (under the chassis, between the axles — never touch, cut, or open)
  • HV junction blocks (front + rear), multi-inverter, ICCU (under 2nd-row seats)
  • SRS components (SRSCM control module, airbags, airbag inflators)
  • Seat-belt pretensioners
  • Air-conditioning line / refrigerant
  • HV charge port
  • Ultra-high-strength-steel zones (Kia marks these red — may be impossible to cut)

Reinforcement (UHSS):

  • Ultra-high-strength steel (Kia ERG "red" zones — challenging or impossible to cut)
  • High-strength steel (Kia ERG "blue" zones)
  • A/B-pillars and rocker/sill (E-GMP battery-surround structure)

Pack piercing risk: The HV battery sits under the chassis between the axles, the lowest structural plane. Any underbody tool, fork-truck tine, or jack stand that pierces the pack risks an internal short and thermal runaway. Kia: never touch, cut, or open the HV battery; avoid jacking against the pack or HV cables.

Isolate damaged vehicle 50 ft from exposures.

Lift / jack points

Use standard OEM stabilization/lift points on a structural member only. Per Kia ERG, when installing a block or jack, avoid HV cables and the HV battery; never place support on exposed HV components or cables.

Fluid hazards

Coolant: Battery + inverter liquid coolant (Kia ERG)

Electrolyte color: Liquid lithium-salt / organic-solvent electrolyte — can vent, ignite, and spark above 300°F (Kia ERG)
